Building a Credible Mentor Brand for The Next Generation of Business Leaders

outline

primary challenge

Malta faces a shortage of qualified Chartered Directors. As the jurisdiction seeks to strengthen its reputation as an attractive destination for business, the lack of a deep, well-trained pool of board-level talent presents a clear risk. A new association was set up to address this critical issue, and it needed a strong visual identity.

  • Messaging & Storytelling
  • Visual Identity

Engagement length: 8 weeks

background

We were approached by an associate of an existing client, who had seen the new visual identity and brand story which we had created for them, and wanted us to do the same for his organisation. He needed a brand designed to appeal both to corporate leaders with established portfolios, as well as the next generation of ambitious business professionals aiming for the top.

challenge

The Association of Directors was set up to provide, through a membership organisation, high quality training programs for directors of businesses to address the very real skills gap and lack of structured training opportunities for board members on the island, and with the goal of offering a certification program.

The Association of Directors was established to address:

  • A skills gap among company directors
  • Limited access to structured, high-quality board training
  • The absence of a clear pathway towards professional certification

To succeed, the organisation needed a brand that could command credibility with established leaders while appealing to the next generation of directors.

solution

Brand strategy

Our task was to create a brand identity that felt both established and contemporary – capable of resonating with senior corporate leaders while remaining aspirational and accessible to ambitious professionals.

We began with a series of collaborative online sessions to:

  • Define the Association’s core brand values
  • Establish positioning and tone of voice
  • Agree the overall design direction, including colour palette and photographic style

The brand was intended to embody ideals of professionality, respect, credibility and trustworthiness, experience and most important of all, inclusivity.

brand identity

A key requirement was the creation of an icon or sigill that could anchor the organisation to its Maltese heritage in a subtle, modern way. We explored a range of potential motifs, drawing on both architectural and cultural references, before selecting a stylised dolphin.

The dolphin was chosen for its:

  • Strong connection to Mediterranean culture
  • Symbolism of intelligence, guidance, and leadership
  • Natural grace, lending itself to a refined, contemporary visual language

This sigill became the cornerstone of the visual identity, supporting a design system that balances authority with approachability.

Creative & Storytelling

With strong roots in Malta, the Association’s brand draws directly from the local landscape – taking cues from the island’s weathered limestone and the deep azure blues of a stormy Mediterranean sea.

These natural references are balanced with a clear corporate sensibility, resulting in a colour palette that feels both restrained and expressive. The combination creates a sober yet subtly playful range of hues, signalling an organisation that respects tradition while remaining open to change and willing to challenge convention.

We also created a photographic language which emphasises the diverse nature of modern business, to both reflect this reality and attract the next generation of business leaders.

outcome

After exploring a number of different cultural signifiers for the brand, the final result with it’s powerful dolphin motif positions the Association of Directors as a credible, forward-looking institution dedicated to raising governance standards in Malta.

The new identity:

  • Appeals equally to established directors and emerging leaders
  • Reflects the organisation’s commitment to training, mentorship, and certification
  • Provides a strong platform to engage regulators, policymakers, and stakeholders
  • Establishes a visual and strategic foundation for long-term growth

With a clear purpose and a confident brand presence, the Association of Directors is now equipped to play a meaningful role in strengthening Malta’s board-level capability and international reputation.
